Magazine publications

I have a substantial presence in Bengali magazines and have been writing in the well-known Calcutta periodical Desh since 1961 and the quarterly Jijnasa since 1981. Bengali poems, book-reviews and articles have been coming out in literary periodicals and the daily papers (eg. Anandabazar Patrika) in a steady stream since the early sixties. In the mid-sixties I had my own column in Desh for reviewing foreign books. I guest-edited an issue of Jijnasa in 1992. My apprenticeship in editing took place in my student days, when I was the editor of the Presidency College Patrika in 1958-59. Many of my Bengali poems and articles have been anthologized from the sixties onwards.

My book Nari, Nogori, was serialized in Desh in the sixties before publication as a book in 1981. My first novel, Noton Noton Pairaguli, was serialized in Desh in 1981-82 prior to publication as a book in 1983. My second play, Mozart Chocolate, was published in an annual issue of Desh in 1998, and my third play, Suparnarekha, was published in the theatre magazine Bohurupee in 2002. My short story, Vasily, was published in an annual issue of Desh in 1999.

My translations from Anglo-Saxon poetry were published in Visvabharati Patrika and Heenayan before being published in book-form. My translations of contemporary British and Argentine poets into Bengali have appeared in Jijnasa.

I continue to contribute regularly to little magazines based in Calcutta and other towns of West Bengal, including Korok, Ebang Mushayera, and Amritalok, and nowadays also to diasporic outlets such as the Canadian Bangla Journal and the American webzine Parabaas (www.parabaas.com).

Examples of my English work in Indian magazines and anthologies can be found in The Visvabharati Quarterly (Santiniketan, May 1991 - April 1992), Tagore: Verse and Versatility (Shahana, Mumbai 2001) and the Journal of Literature and Aesthetics (Kollam, Kerala, January - June 2002).

In Britain I have contributed to magazines such as Poetry Review, Wasafiri, Other Poetry, Fire, Prop, Tears in the Fence, and Modern Poetry in Translation. A contribution is forthcoming in The Swansea Review and in Frank: An International Journal of Contemporary Writing & Art, published from Paris. Some English poems have been anthologized in In Their Own Voice: The Penguin Anthology of Contemporary Indian Women Poets (1993) and The Redbeck Anthology of British South Asian Poetry (Redbeck Press, 2000).

Some of my translations of Tagore poems have been anthologized in The Green Book of Poetry (Frontier Publishing, Windetts, Kirstead, Norfolk, UK, 1993), The One and the Many (Bayeux Arts, Inc., Calgary, Canada, 1997), and Time's Tidings (Anvil Press Poetry, 1999).

A poem from Spaces I Inhabit was translated into Spanish and published in the Buenos Aires magazine Empresa Poetica.
